So I went around the house and made sure every wifi device in the house was off, connected my PC via cable to one of the Ethernet ports on the Telecom-supplied TG589vn v2 router (which was the "recommended" method for doing the speed test), and here is the result:

Still more than happy with that.

Next, I disconnected the cable and re-ran the test connecting to the router via wifi, and here is that result:

As you can see, it's sh!te. The behaviour of my wife and daughter's iPads and my Android phone suggests to me we're all getting this kind of performance wirelessly. So the problem is not with the Telecom network, or my house wiring, it has to be the wifi connection, right?

When I look at the router, the Power and Broadband LEDs are green - solid on. The Internet LED is green - blinking irregularly, which I take to mean sending and/or receiving data. The Wireless LED is also green - blinking. The manual says this means "Wireless activity, WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK encryption", but I don't think it's blinking in time with any connected activity. It's just blinking constantly, really fast (approx. twice a second) all the time, even when all the wireless devices in the house have wifi turned off. So I'm wondering if this indicates some kind of unusual activity but the router itself that is interfering with the connections to wireless devices in the house, hence the apparent poor performance.

Any ideas?

I found the wifi performance of the TG589 is not that good. I end up using it in bridge mode and than use a TP-link router (with no ADSL or VDSL support, just a router) to do the PPPoE authenication and wifi as it provides better wifi coverage.

Of course, thats what you get with 99 dollar connection, cheapest router.

BUT, i think andrew027 have problems with something else, i think it's not router trouble. Also check your site, there can be a lot of wireless points and they can create a collision, try to change channel or frequency. I have found that tompson routers which telecom given on 2009-2011 connections configured for channel 6 of 802.11b/g. In central city(for example apartment building): there are HEAPS of access points with channel 6 configured, if you will use channel 6 you will have bad performance, if you will use channel 1-3, you will have much better performance, up to 70% better. So same problem can be with your wifi connection.

And basically wireless is $hit, use cables.

The Chorus guys have just installed VDSL - did a test and both wireless and wired came out around the same speed:

One thing I did was to disable the 'Power Reduction' option under wireless and the coverage/speed is a whole lot better. So far so good and given that I only have three devices at home with only one of them being used at any one time I am tempted to sell off my Airport Extreme 802.11ac in favour of just going for the modem/router from Telecom since it does an ok job.

how will we know when the profile fine tune in the next 10 days?
Do we get automatic disconnection for a minute for the profile to fine tune or it will always stay online n fine tune itself secretly?

Mine seemed to happen during the night, on the one time I noticed a difference in my Telnet stats, which corresponded with a jump in downstream speeds.

Are there any downsides to turning off the Power Reduction feature on the Technicolour modem? I'm tempted to do it myself.

Agreed. It shoudn't use more than running a seperate wireless base station.
I'm set for a Friday install, have a few wireless devices but the acid test will come when the kids come over the weekend after install.
Will have to come up with a new Wireless Access point name, Police Surveillance Van 3 has served me so well.
(You would not believe how scared the kids were when I said to connect to it)

lol, I'm just having a look at Andrew's results - there is definitely something wrong with the speed dying that badly given that I've tried both my laptop, desktop and HTC One phone and I can't seem to reproduce those results. It all comes down to where the router is placed and how far/how many obstacles (walls etc) are in the way before getting to the device.

As for the name of the router, I tend to name mine after classical music composers :P

People need to realise wireless is a complementary technology to cabled Ethernet. It is not, and never will be a replacement.

In some urban areas 2.4Ghz WiFi is pretty much useless these days. If you live in a high noise environment such as inner city apartment you'll find it's even worse.

Down: 14-15
Up: about 1.8
2 weeks after installation. The really good news is -- slightly better than my ADSL stats!
And Telecom aren't going to charge me for VDSL.
I'm in a major residential area of St Heliers, Auckland. No, I'm not hoping for cable, no sign at all of that. I'm just wishing for new cabinets and wiring in the area.

No, not house wiring, splitter at source, and Telecom reports that this is the best I can hope to obtain at my address. Crow says the cabinet is not too far away, but I suspect the copper doesn't follow the crow.
Interesting how bad some suburban areas are still. Perhaps this is part of the Government's plan to keep house prices in Auckland down?

I'm going to assume you are kidding and not suggesting the government is using poor broadband infrastructure (due to copper infrastructure potentially decades old) to keep house prices in Auckland down, while at the same time spending bazillions deploying a large scale FTTH network.

Okay, I've disabled Power Reduction, will see what difference that makes. Still getting around 30/9 wirelessly, which I am pretty satisfied with. The Chorus guy said the line was capable of up to 39 - given that, is it worth trying a better router connected to the Technicolour to wring out a few extra mpbs? I guess even if speed didn't improve, the stability of the wireless might be better. I sometimes get dropouts when I am streaming from my Mac to my home theatre system via Playback app (which is brilliant, BTW, if you have a Mac).

My sister is on UFB 100 and got a downstream of 104 on the weekend. So jealous :)

I noticed that when the DLM change, the Uptime for the modem reset back to 0 hours 0 minutes n start count again.
