If you mount a windmill on a ship, and use it to drive a screw propeller, you can sail directly into the wind and otherwise make use of the wind regardless of which way it is blowing. All you have to do is rotate the blades of the windmill to keep them facing into the wind. It doesn’t matter what the wind direction is.

A vertical axis wind turbine is even better... no rotating of the windmill to face into the wind. But I think there are issues of stability with large surface area objects on the tops of ships.

Might(?) work on like grain\crude oil\gas ships where the cargo is below decks.

Can't see how it would work on a container or cruise ship, and what would be the impact of a rotating blade on the stability of the vessel??

What's the point of having a windmill driving a generator to drive a motor to turn a propeller to push a boat through the water, when you could just use sails to push the boat along?

Actually there is a point, without a keel effect then you can't sail efficiently (make way) into the wind, and even with a keel effect you can't sail directly into the wind - but with a windmill powering a prop, in theory you could.

It seems to be a very complex answer to a simple problem perhaps answered that by just using sails where at random odds you'd be going downwind half the time, but if you plan your route effectively, you can improve those odds substantially.  I guess flight planners for aircraft use that concept to maximise push from the jetstream, minimise losses when it's blowing the wrong way.

Trump Again Attacks Teenage Climate Activist Greta Thunberg, Who Clapped Back at Him on Twitter Last Week

The president previously attacked Greta Thunberg on Twitter with an apparently sarcastic message that called her a "very happy young girl"

People Magazine, By Rachel DeSantis

President Donald Trump is using his Twitter account to once again attack teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, this time to amplify a snide dismissal of her public appearances as “acting.”

...“What an actress!” the user, @Opinion8dKellie, tweeted, adding, “I won’t be held hostage by someone who just got a learner’s permit. Sorry kiddo!”

Though the tweet was written on Sept. 23, Trump, 73, retweeted it Thursday morning.

“Keep up the great work Kellie!” he wrote.

...“I honestly don’t understand why adults would choose to spend their time mocking and threatening teenagers and children for promoting science, when they could do something good instead,” she wrote on Twitter on Sept. 25.

...She’s even changed her Twitter bio to reflect her sense of humor: “A kind but poorly informed teenager,” it reads.

A good read. Short story is that beef farming causes too much direct emissions (methane from cows) uses too much water uses too much land. This a very sensible and achievable target. Also, by recovering the land for agriculture and forestry, you could make global agriculture carbon neutral

I have just purchased an E-Bike. It is going to be a big battle to learn to balance and ride again and to be honest it is exacerbating my anxiety but the results I think will be worth it.

Made a few changes of late. Brought an E-Bike which I absolutely love. I was always a bit against them as I do road cycling and just thought it was cheating yourself out of exercise but I got a peddle assist model so I still do plenty of work (I live on top of a large hill). I have made a 40min uphill slog into a 13min enjoyable ride.

Also went plant based a month ago including no dairy.

I know that this is all to little, to late but its something I guess.

Not at all. If x billion of us from first world countries did similar, that's a big step. If the Governments did what was required, it would be resolved, no question

Getting there.

The Tesla Model 3 was delivered 3 weeks ago.

We've ordered an MG ZS EV (280km real range) as our 2nd car.

But today our solar + Tesla powerwalls went live. Awesome.

don't use disposal stuff like e-scooters?

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12289433

Thats a bit short sighted. I work from home. If I had to work at the office again, I could ride my motorbike (fun) Or I could buy my own eScooter, use that for the better bus stop, avoid parking issues, and have an easier trip. I could also bypass the bus if fine.

They have a clear place for the last mile or a few miles. Emissions.

Dont let the Lime dicks colour the real benefit.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/climate-news/117967162/scathing-international-report-marks-nzs-climate-action-insufficient

So, NZ has a Government that's focussed on Climate Change. No we don't. Globally, our efforts are yet again classed as insufficient. It goes to show at Government level we are NIMBY. Yes, we agree on Climate Change, yes we will do stuff, but no, dont want to do too much in case it hurts, loses votes, makes people unhappy

again, i seriously doubt that 4 million people crusing around in electric scooters, bikes, cars and trucks and eating only nuts is going to do squat to offset the pollution of ONE SINGLE CITY

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/12/03/tech/india-pollution-crisis-tech-cities/index.html

look i'm not saying don't do it. but could it be possible that by feeling good that you are stopping climate change (i'm not sure that without China and India doing most of the work that it will achieve much), you are actually facilitating the exploitation of the poor who mines your rare metals for batteries; and (now this is just a guess this one i am probably just making up) poor farmers exploited by middlemen traders (search avocado wars for example), refusing to eat un-happy meat trading it for unhappy humans who slave to produce whatever you want to buy. i'm not saying one is necessarily less bad than the other, but these things come to us at the cost of some poor kid or family.

Again, thats a fallacious argument. If you seperate the globe into pockets of 4 million people, how are we doing? poor. Its about the contribution of all 7 billion of us

What you are saying is that we should ignore climate change in NZ, rock the oil burning etc as it wont matter. Half of LA should say the same, as should EVERY pocket of 4 million people in the world. Australia, Canada and Beijing have only have populations of around 20 million, thats bugger all too, so they should forget about climate change as well. I could add in further pockets to take us up to 7 billion that should not bother as well

Maybe a volcano will erupt, oh bugger, why bother now?

that's why i leave it to the clever people to figure it out. i'm going to get on my push bike to get to work now ... no emissions no batteries and free parking.
