I think your definition of OK is very weak.

Crap = <70% of national speed.
Bad = <82% of national speed
OK = ~90% of national speed.
Good = ~100% of national speed.

A lot of the time you will show poorer performance to speedtests that are many hops away. This does not always translate to poor international bandwidth. for example, if i run 2 x Speedtests at once to Australia i get 5.5MBits quite a bit higher than when i one one at a time. go figure.

This is actually to do with TCP back-off after a dropped packets, and the small packet sizes in reference to the size of the pipes now. This basically means if you drop one or two packets, even on a fast link your computer won't saturate the link because of the TCP congestion settings.

This has become more of a problem, and different protocols and scalings are being devised to fix this. There are whitepapers about this I would dig up if I wan't too lazy.

Now to get back on topic, my speeds are as follows

Auckland
3758 Down
Up 554

This is about half the speed I usually get, but still 1megabits better than when I was on Xtra

To Los Angeles

755 Down
293 Up

Not exactly the best, from these results, it looks like xnet may have international backhaul constraints as well.

I hope they get it sorted, I'm sick of changing ISPs and just want a good reliable fast ISP I can use forever.

Your both right, latency and packet loss both effect tcp transfer rates along with your TCP stack config at both ends and many other variables.

Mine is much better tonight to local servers, but overseas is still a major issue.

Once again, it's the double-issue.

I've been moaning about INTERNATIONAL being awful (500kBps less than national)
National hasn't really been a problem.

Been an ongoing battle to get this sorted. My DSL would have huge variation & drop in speed. This had a major impact on VFX voice quality, all garbled, cut in & out, etc etc. I'm also still on an old DSLAM, where as I think the ISAM's handle VFX much better under congestion.
