This is something people really need to understand. It would be nice if the smaller players could be honest but I guess their business is dependent on the smoke and mirrors you mentioned in another post.

I wouldn't be surprised if 24/7 hosting's debacle was caused by something like a medical issue with the owner/operator who had no provisions in his business to cope.

Yep, the (somewhat) passive nature of web hosting makes it an attractive business model, but it's easy to overlook the fact it's a 24/7 (excuse the pun) business, and if you're a one-man-shop then you are making a huge commitment to service those customers at all time. Until you have the income to support a partner or employee (both of whom you can trust to look after the place) then you have zero ability to take any sort of leave.

Generalising here, but it's hosts like 247 that look after the tyre kickers, and after 247 another one will come along to repeat the pattern.

Oh I totally agree.

There is definitely a market for it. I think as someone said, the business model is just too shaky. If you as a customer need unlimited bandwidth, then your site should be making money. I think a lot of first timers relate their home internet usage to what a website would do.

Some of the resellers are becoming like $2 shops - you have to sell 1000's of products just to scrape by.
I mean, if it costs 1.45+gst per month for a domain name and someone is selling them for 18.95+gst per annum - well....

My site didn't so much need unlimited bandwidth, but just a lot more than my hosting company had on offer, during a period of time when the site became briefly popular (it's a fansite, and when one of the movies it was based on was released, it started getting a helluva lot more hits than I anticipated.) Being a non-profit fansite (don't hate on the lameness of fansites - everyone needs a hobby, right?) spending $6 a month on all the data I needed seemed like a sweet idea.

This is one of my pet peeves . Bandwidth is a measure of Speed and you cannot have unlimited speed. What they really mean is unlimited data transfer not bandwidth.

So you can have 256Kbps and have unlimited data transfer (Your website may be slow) or you can have a 50Mbps and have unlimited data transfer over it (Your website may be really fast)

I don't know that "unlimited bandwidth" is a common offering from hosts, but certainly "unlimited data".

Many years ago, we started offering "unmetred data" because for 99.9% of sites, it suits their usage and they don't have to worry about how much data their site chews through.
Of course, if things start to spike, we can have a conversation about other options, without upfront penalties.

Any host offering, or any user believing, "unlimited data" is something that can be fulfilled, is kidding themselves.

It doesn't really look like 24/7 have actually done anything at all in the last week in a bit, apart from turning manual backups back on, which should never be off in the first place.

Domains still can't be accessed, and won't be because Voyager/1st Domains are apparently not going to give them access again, which forces everyone to eventually shift when they can. But I emailed 1stdomains half a week ago to shift domains and haven't even had a reply, so if they're going to shut down access through 24/7, then they need to be pretty on to it with transfers. Fortunately, nothing has expired in that time.

I see both 247 and klibtech websites are down today with a Forbidden message. Wonder if the servers are to follow soon? Maybe the owner has just had enough and is letting it all go down the drain now?

PS to the comments above, plenty of "big" hosts offer unlimited bandwidth, but it doesn't exist. Start using up huge amounts and you'll get a fair usage email - just like ISP's send out on their supposed "unlimited" plans. No one offers true unlimited bandwidth.

I received a reply from them a couple of days ago. They replied to the ticket regarding my non-payment of account (which I had paid) and apologised for incorrectly processing the payment and it's all sorted out now blah blah, and they also gave me the UDAI for my domain name.

I had tried to get the UDAI through Voyager a couple of days earlier, but they told me 24/7 had actually registered it through Internet.bs Corp. I contacted them, and they just told me their reseller (24/7) was trying hard to fix the issue and would contact me as soon as poss. I had no hope of that, but yeah... Surprisingly I DID get a reply from 24/7 - they gave me my UDAI and an apology.

I haven't shifted my site yet - I have it fully backed up at Net Needs where my other sites have been hosted without issue for years, but at the moment my account at 24/7 is still active (the site's still online so I guess not all of their servers are down yet?) so I just figured I'd wait til my month's hosting has run out or their last server drops - whichever happens first.

Regardless of any stories put out by 24/7 Hosting that they were back up and going, they are certainly not functioning in a useful fashion.

I paid these clowns two weeks ago for renewal of domain name and hosting. Not one single response to my numerous queries, unless you count automatic replies.

Now, my domain shows 'pending release', my email died the other day, and my website went awol yesterday.

I can't even access the 'client area' now.

My money has gone down the gurgler I expect...
