In some countries where Governments have taken strong action by way of introducing EV subsidies etc there has been a much higher uptake of EVs relative to petrol vehicles than in New Zealand. You could say this is because some overseas Governments have seen this as a Government problem that can help be "solved" by specific Government action, such as subsidies etc. This is principally because some Governments are taking stronger action on climate change etc than we are here.

So, if Governments fail to take decisive action to encourage the uptake of EVs, then you could say that they are part of the cause of the continuing high inflow of petrol vehicles. At least NZ has introduced a policy of providing subsidies on EVs in the future, but we have been very slow to get going compared with several other countries.

At the moment, about 97 out of every 100 new vehicles purchased in NZ are petrol driven vehicles, and this situation must be of concern to the Government as that's why they have finally decided to try and do something about it! When the import of petrol vehicles is banned altogether, then we'll be getting somewhere, but the worldwide shortage of EVs and their high prices means this won't happen anytime soon.

Our governments, both of them, are not that into climate change. It stops when its a we will buy more EV's for our fleet. In NZ I'm not convinced we will go hard out when the up to 8k subsidies come in. Im talking NZ not Norway. When prices are closer to ICE and when there is a choice that will make far more difference than a small subsidy on an over priced car. And we are talking mass market cars not upmarket. The more choices will be here soon, prices should reduce, subsidy about the same time, I'd wait till then see what happens. We can't afford much that's why we say we are into CC but we don't do much about it. Talk is cheap, that's climate change in NZ as I see it

As I've mentioned above, why would you compares sales of vehicles from different classes to judge its popularity? Someone who is buying an SUV is not going to be looking at the sedan category - a Model 3 was no more a likely option to that buyer than a Holden Commodore.

Under normal circumstance I would agree with you. However let's flip the statement you made around to some extent.

Someone who is buying an SUV is not going to be looking at the sedan category

Someone who is buying an EV wants an SUV but has to look in the sedan category.

Let's look at someone who is looking at buying an EV with a preference for the performance and features (speed/distance/size etc) that a Tesla has. They would like an SUV but Tesla don't make one, so they buy a sedan. If EV's were not available and they were in the market for an ICE they would have bought an SUV.

I contend the likes of the Tesla 3 are getting sales that could otherwise go to a SUV. Hence my reasoning for suggesting you need to include SUV sales in your comparisons as there is no SUV equivalent for the likes of the Model 3.

Tesla does make a SUV, the Model X. It's also not the only SUV EV, with Audi, Hyundai and Kia also having their own. So there are options in that class.

However, I would agree that some Model 3 sales would have normally been an SUV sale, and it's possible those will eventually be traded for a Model Y. I don't think that small cross over means we should be comparing the sales of a sedan with the entire SUV class.

If you are going to be comparing apples to apples, compare Tesla to other cars in the same price category. That includes SUVs. How many SUVs in the $160,000 price range are sold each year in NZ vs. the Model X.

I think you will see a good amount of Model Y being sold in NZ when it becomes available. And the right way to see how well its doing would be to compare it to other SUVs in the same price braket.

For 2019, the Model X outsold the Mercedes GLS and the BMW X6, lagged a bit behind the Audi Q8 but was significantly behind the Range Rover Sport.  The Audi e-Tron was only 6 registrations (with 83) behind the Model X (89) though, and also outsold the BMW and Mercedes.

It also depends on whether you actually take your SUV off the road.

I suspect that if you do, a RRS is going to outperform any Tesla that currently exists.

Its all very interesting, but if we are interested in climate change and the other benefits of EV's, and EV takeup, $160,000 SUV's are not worth bothering about.

Yeah, I'm sure there are a lot of metal driveways in Remuera that require a tractorSUV to drive over.

I imagine he's referring to one of the better known and highly regarded of Indian vehicles, the Range Rover Sport.

Ok, yes he drives a Range Rover. This is an EV thread, if any 4WD, has an EV engine, it will be as capable as the same vehicle with an ICE. Maybe more as its more direct drive, so maybe more precise. Otherwise its just being pickey

The big expensive SUVs with their high powered engines are bigger emitters than the likes of a Mazda CX5 - one Range Rover Sport can emit as much as two and a bit CX5s. So getting buyers of those types of SUVs into an EV equivalent is of some benefit.

Obviously, lower priced EV SUVs are also important, since there were 2800 CX-5's registered last year vs 417 Range Rover Sports.

Yes,but we are talking drop in a bucket of what is already just drops. Very high hanging fruit there.
